My stomach curdled. Of course. Leave it to a coward to run home and tell his brother about how mean the other faction was.

“What is it?” Alyssa rubbed the sleep from her eyes, yawning like a cat.

“Asgard is coming for us. But this isn’t enough information.” I lit the paper with wildfire and crushed the ashes in my hand. “I have to find them.”

“Find who?” Hreidulfr moved out of my way as I pushed the furs back and got out of bed.

“Our informant. I haven’t wanted to risk their life by going in person but we can’t fight what we can’t see coming.” I started to strip off my sleeping clothes, too hurried to care who was watching me change. I pulled a pair of trousers and a tunic from the wardrobe. “And if Asgard is coming, I need to get our informant out safely. Bring them home.”

“How will you do it?” Hreidulfr had turned his gaze away, the sweetheart.

“I’ll fly there, but I’m going to need help getting them out of the city. You collected the horses from yesterday?”

“We did, both of them.”

“You and Mist take the horses. I can get the informant to Yggdrasil, and from there you’ll need to get them back here.”

“Right. We can do that. But…” He scratched his beard, worry on his face. “We’re risking an awful lot so close to their attack. I need to know why. I value loyalty; I do. But one life isn’t worth risking the entire city, is it?”

“Normally it isn’t, no.” I turned to them, unsure if I should be telling them at all. But time was already up. “We’re risking everything because the informant is Hod.”
